John Young, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 13th, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on August 27th, 1934, in St. Joseph, Missouri, John was a cherished resident of Blakely, Georgia, where he spent most of his life surrounded by family and friends.
John was a proud alumnus of the University of Georgia, where he graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. He dedicated many years of his professional life to Georgia Pacific until a work-related accident led to his early retirement. Despite the challenges he faced, John remained a resilient and inspiring figure to all who knew him.
A member of the First Baptist Church of Blakely, John was known for his unwavering faith and commitment to his community. His kindness, wisdom, and gentle spirit touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting legacy of love and compassion.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Geneva Young; his son, Terry Johnson, and daughter-in-law, Judy, of Columbia, AL; and his cherished grandchildren, Kimberly McFay (Jeff) of Blakely, GA, and Leslie James (Phil) of Greenwood, SC. He was a proud great-grandfather to Bailey Holley (Dalton) of Atlanta, GA, Owen McFay of Blakely, GA, Kendall James, Karlie Dean, and Brody James, all of Greenwood, SC, and a great-great-grandfather to Parker Holley of Atlanta, GA. John is also survived by his sister, Sara Bowman of Colorado Springs, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Kenneth Young and Winifred Young.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate John's life will be held at Manry- Jordan- Hodges Funeral Home on Saturday, November 15th, 2025, at 11:00 am, with Rev. Chris Guffey officiating. Interment will follow in George Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation at the funeral home from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on the same day.
Serving as pallbearers will be Owen McFay, Brody James, Jeff McFay, Dalton Holley, Phil James, and Craig Gordon.
Flowers are appreciated, but donations may be made to the Bereavement fund at First Baptist Church or place of your choice.
Arrangements are being handled by Manry-Jordan-Hodges Funeral Home. John will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those he loved.
