James Harold Gleaton, Jr., of Plains, GA, formerly of Fort Gaines, GA passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.

Hal was born in Edison, Georgia, February 11, 1942, to the late James Harold Gleaton and Jeanette Johnson Gleaton. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blakely, GA where he loved attending his Bradley Bridges Men’s Sunday School Class. As a graduate of Auburn University, Hal earned his business degree in 1964 and he loved Auburn with all his heart.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Claude Peyton Gleaton and a grandson, Lorin James Lanier.

Hal is survived by his wife, Carolyn Pritchett Lanier Gleaton, his daughter, Natalie Gleaton Givins (Jamie) of Monroe, GA, his son, James Harold Gleaton III (Kim) of Jacksonville, FL, his stepsons, Sam Lamar Lanier (Molly) of Statesboro, GA and Tye Lanier of Panama City, FL, one brother Calvin Gleaton (Ann) of Cairo, GA, four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by a niece, three nephews, and many cousins as well as dear family friends, Ralph and Heather Stuart whom he loved very much.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, July 7, 2026 in Oak Grove Cemetery in Arlington, GA with Brother Randy Stokes officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to show appreciation to the Phoebe/Sumter County Hematology/Oncology Department for their loving and compassionate care by requesting donations be made to Friends Against Cancer of Sumter County in memory of Hal. Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 6421, Americus, GA 31709.

Honorary pallbearers include Ralph Stuart, James Givins, Ford Gleaton, Sam Lanier, Anthony Gleaton, Peyton Gleaton, David Gleaton, Eric Gleaton, Tanner Gleaton, and Josh Gleaton.

Manry-Jordan-Hodges Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
