Herbert James Swords, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 27th, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on January 8th, 1936, in Blakely, Georgia, Herbert remained a lifelong resident of his cherished hometown.
Herbert dedicated 30 years of his professional life as a Power House Operator at Georgia Pacific in Cedar Springs, GA, where he was known for his strong work ethic and dedication. A proud veteran, Herbert served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps, embodying the values of service and commitment throughout his life.
Herbert is survived by his devoted wife, Gail Huff Swords, and their loving children: daughter Eve Swords of Blakely, GA, and sons Stacy Swords of Atlanta, GA, and Steven Swords (Lacy) of Midland, GA. He was a proud grandfather to Halee Swords, Brock Swords, Gabriel Buxton, and Christopher Buxton. Herbert is also survived by his siblings: Wayne Swords (Bonnie) of Columbia, AL, Tony Swords (Charlotte) of Natchitoches, LA, and Margie Murkerson of Dothan, AL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Luna Swords and Mamie Frances Swords, as well as his sisters, Peggy Simmons and Linda Gordon.
Herbert's life will be celebrated with a funeral service at the Blakely First Methodist Church , on Friday, May 30th, 2025, at 11:00 am., officiated by Rev. Tucker Lewis and Dr. Alex Howell. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during a visitation at Manry Jordan Hodges Funeral Home on Thursday, May 29th, 2025, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Serving as pallbearers will be Brock Swords, Mark Swords, Jef Widener, Jimmy Taylor, Bryon Cliett, and Cam Widener. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Charles Robertson, Dennis Cobbs, Nathan Gordon, Hubert Hayes, and Mike Vickers
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Blakely First Methodist Building Fund or the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) in Herbert's memory.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Manry-Jordan-Hodges Funeral Home. Herbert's legacy of love, service, and dedication will be cherished by all who knew him.
